A NOTE FROM A TOUCH OF HOPE BREAST FOUNDATION

We are asking for your help….

A Touch of Hope Breast Foundation is Nevada’s only free-standing non-profit organization dedicated solely to women, men and families affected by Breast Cancer.

The cornerstone of this foundation has been our Breast Wellness Program which provides no-cost access to breast treatment for women, men and children, age 49 and younger who are uninsured, underinsured or underserved in the Southern Nevada community. During the first two years of this program we have provided access to services from screening mammograms through stereotactic biopsy to over 400 women, men and children who would otherwise have fallen through the cracks in the system.

One call we received was from a married mother of two who was only 17 years old. Although she had no insurance, she did have a palpable breast mass. Oddly enough this young woman found herself without insurance due to the fact that she was not yet 18 which made her ineligible for her husbands policy.  Because she was married, she was no longer eligible for coverage on her parent’s policy.  Through our program she received the services she needed and will enjoy a long life with her kids.

Another was a 46 year old woman who is self-employed and can not afford health insurance. She went for a routine mammogram in October, was told her results were suspicious and she needed additional views taken. It took her until December to save the money for the additional tests and the news got worse. She needed a biopsy and had no money to pay for that. Eventually she found out about A Touch of Hope Breast Foundation. Within ten days we had her enrolled in our Breast Wellness Program, scheduled and had her stereotactic biopsy performed. Luckily she did not have to spend many more months worrying about her health while trying to save the money for her testing. She received NO bill for the services we provided her access to.

We have provided service to the very young, including a 12 year old girl who developed a breast mass when she began menstruation. Although she had insurance, it did not cover breast services due to her young age. Her parents assumed she had coverage for anything that may have happened to their dependent child, only to find out that their policy allowed for no breast services for anyone under 40.  We stepped in and got this young girl into a Breast Specialist and paid for her to have an ultrasound.  She is now enjoying a happy childhood.

Women are not the only people affected by Breast Cancer.  We recently enrolled a 35 year old man in our program that has just been diagnosed with breast cancer.  Although rare in men, Breast Cancer can certainly strike anyone.

As you can see, breast disease does not discriminate, and neither does, A Touch of Hope Breast Foundation. Our only criteria for enrollment are that the woman, man or child be age 49 or younger, a legal resident of Nevada, and are uninsured, underinsured or underserved. We provide equal access to service regardless of race, ethnic background, religion or social standing.

Unfortunately, the UMC outpatient oncology department closed its doors this past December sending shockwaves throughout the Southern Nevada cancer community. There were approximately 400 patients enrolled at the time of closing, 20% were being treated for breast cancer. We can not let these breast cancer patients go without life-saving treatment.

The Breast Wellness Program of A Touch of Hope Breast Foundation was funded in 2007 and 2008 through a grant from Komen of Southern Nevada. In response to UMC closing, Komen of Southern Nevada felt the need to fund a treatment program. Of the $800,000.00 they funded to the community for 2009, over $500.000.00 went to this treatment grant. This amount will treat between 3 and 12 women which will certainly help their lives. However, with the majority of Komen funding spent in response to UMC’s closure, they have cut most other programs from their grant cycle for 2009 and our Breast Wellness Program was not spared. Available funding expired March 31, 2009 and it is imperative that we raise significant funds immediately.

The most successful of breast cancer outcomes come from those tumors found early in their development. Without early screening and detection lives will be lost. A Touch of Hope Breast Foundation remains committed to providing the tried and true methods of early screening and detection as critical methods of Breast Health treatment.  1 of every 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer in their lifetimes. Approximately 1600 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in Nevada every year.

We thank you in advance for any help you can provide to those most desperately in need. Even in these tough times, we stand by our motto:

Where there is Hope…There are No Limits
